Comment on 4 Exotic Places For Avid Bird-Watchers To Move To by Visa Assistance https://lifeasahuman.com/2022/travel-adventure/travel/4-exotic-places-for-avid-bird-watchers-to-move-to/comment-page-1/#comment-2434756 Fri, 22 Aug 2025 03:54:54 +0000 https://lifeasahuman.com/?p=403314#comment-2434756 Take St Lucia, for example—six endemic species (that colorful St Lucia Parrot included!) and around 180 birds in total—that’s birdwatching paradise right there. Throw in accessible sanctuaries like the Millet Bird Sanctuary or the Vieux Fort Wetlands, and suddenly your daily commute could be your birding adventure.

New Zealand also grabbed my attention—245 native species, Oamaru’s Yellow‑eyed Penguins, the elusive Shore Plover, and even giant prehistoric parrots once roamed the islands. The fact that you can aim for permanent resident status without immediately becoming a citizen feels incredibly flexible.

Costa Rica feels like a dream, too—toucans, hummingbirds, quetzals, and rarities like Turquoise Cotinga or Three‑wattled Bellbird making an appearance in lush reserves such as Wilson Botanical Gardens and Curi‑Cancha Reserve. Plus, if you’re retiring with at least $1,000 in monthly income, the Pensionado Program makes moving feel very doable.

And I hadn’t considered Iceland until now—it may be cooler (literally), but spotting Arctic Terns, Great Skuas, or wandering along Látrabjarg’s cliffs sounds unparalleled. Sure, immigration is more restricted unless you’re an EU/EEA citizen or secure a specific job, but for serious birders it might be worth it.

Comment on What Causes a Person to Be Intentionally Cruel? by Amanda https://lifeasahuman.com/2011/mind-spirit/humanity/what-causes-a-person-to-be-intentionally-cruel/comment-page-1/#comment-2430170 Thu, 03 Jul 2025 10:29:11 +0000 http://lifeasahuman.com/?p=258129#comment-2430170 In reply to Cassidy.

Cassidy,
I’m so sorry for what you went through as a kid, and I’m very proud of you for not going down a darker path despite enduring such horrific and dehumanizing forms of trauma at a very vulnerable stage of your life. The idea that hurt people hurt people doesn’t apply to every person who has been through trauma, but it tends to be true that people who have grown up in abusive environments face issues of some sort; if it isn’t violence towards others, it can be self-loathing, substance abuse, not being able to trust people, viewing the world as dangerous, etc.. So I don’t think the author is saying that all abusers are victims, and that because of this, they are innocent of any wrongdoing, but more so that many people who resort to being cruel and violent to others have learned it from somewhere. The fact that you haven’t gone down this path means you’re a kind and strong person, and I hope you know that about yourself. 🙂

Comment on Thomas Merton – Sexuality and Spiritual Denial by Wallace Hamilton https://lifeasahuman.com/2010/mind-spirit/spirituality-and-religion/thomas-merton-sexuality-and-spiritual-denial/comment-page-1/#comment-2429465 Tue, 24 Jun 2025 19:32:02 +0000 http://lifeasahuman.com/?p=156180#comment-2429465 So, Thomas Merton was human! Mary Magdalene loved Jesus and vice versa. If that love was consummated it is of importance only to them. Negative prescriptions only serve to stifle personal growth.

The cheese burgers were so good, mere words don’t do them justice. The homemade potato salad, fries, milkshakes and pies…..everything was just so delicious. I loved hearing stories about Ian’s and all the people that felt they’d found a home away from home. What a remarkable family buisness.

Here in New Zealand, we’re surrounded by diverse landscapes—from native bush to coastal shores—that offer endless artistic inspiration. I’ve found that taking walks and observing the unique shapes and patterns of our flora, like the koru of the silver fern or the vibrant hues of the pōhutukawa, fuels my creativity. Your approach of embracing imperfection and focusing on growth is a beautiful reminder to let go of perfectionism and simply create. Thank you for sharing your journey and insights!
